Plants in my window

I have started growing herbs… I really hope this is not just one of my passing interests. In order to get fast results i “cheated” and have bought 3 plants and just separated them into more pots.

Together with a lavender bush from my mother I now have:
3 Marjoram (that reminds “my” italian aunts), 3 Melissa (also called hjärtansfröjd in Swedish = joy of heart) 2 Basil and 1 Lavender.

Since I did not have many jars at home to put the plants in after I divided them I improvised and made holes in the bottom of old cans, plastic cups etc.

Open source design alternatives

I work as a freelancing graphic designer and would like to more and more go over to open source programs but I am lazy and scared that they will not be as good as the commercial expensive Adobe CS programs. I suppose that for most things, not to complicated work, the open source alternatives are enough but…

Another thing that bugs me are all the new versions, I have InDesign CS3 on my stationary computer and InDesign CS2 on my laptop and I would have to buy a new expensive license to be able to work on the same document on both computers.

Anyway here is a list of open source alternatives for the main Adobe CS programs and some day I will seriously test them to find out if it really is worth paying for the commercial programs.

Hosting

Just bought a hosting and domain-package at Hosthi and I am looking forward start experimenting with it. They have the cPanel and Fantastico, super user-friendly admin-systems, you can auto-install all the common scripts like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc.

They also have unlimited sub-domains so I plan to maybe move this blog there to a sub-domain and set up one also for my blogging sister… and experiment with a Joomla-based portfolio on another… Yes both, I know that WordPress can be more than just blogs and that Joomla is more difficult to learn, but I want to learn both. Until now I have only made XHTLM and CSS based web sites and with the web-world evolving I feel like it is time to learn more dynamic stuff. I am studying a bit basic PHP and MySql too on my own on a local host (XAMPP so easier for security reasons to let someone else host the things I want put online).

I would also like to test creating a webshop… so I am looking around and found this article Zencart vs. osCommerce so I guess it will be Zencart, at least to start with!

A good blogger? or a bad one…

There is much written about how to be a good or “successful” blogger like this : What makes a good Blogger? and more on copyblogger.com: The 5 Immutable Laws of Persuasive Blogging , The Two Most Important Words in Blogging …

They give you advice and try to establish what it is that makes one blog interesting and another one so so… but I don’t know it seems so unpersonal and strategic to talk about a “successful blogger” and how to write “blog-copy”.

Maybe it is a definition issue, what is a blog and what is blogging for, I still think the best blogs are personal, unpersonal blogs are like any other articles out there, they can be interesting or useful but might as well be on an online magazine. But maybe that is my ideas, that the beauty of a blog is that a normal person can write for the whole world, that there are people out there who are interested.

I don’t think and don’t even try to be either a good or successful blogger… I am not good at being public and personal at the same time, and I am no journalist or writer either. I just want to have my space online, where I gather some things I like on one page… just for me and anyone who might like it and find it.
